This year, our focus was honoring the legendary keyboardist Patrick Moraz, who played in such bands as Mainhorse, Refugee, YES, and the Moody Blues. In our booth, we featured our Story of Moraz traveling exhibit as well as having Patrick in the booth with us each day.

Canadian synth collector Lee Keeley generously loaned us Patrick’s vintage Minimoog, which he played on YES’ Relayer album, and Patrick’s Minimoog Voyager, which Patrick purchased directly from Bob Moog at a NAMM Show many years ago. We rounded out the synth offering by bringing a vintage Moog Liberation keytar from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives.

Our goal to bring Patrick’s legacy to light was hugely successful. Hundreds of people came by our booth and were inspired by Patrick and his instruments. It is deeply meaningful for us to fulfill our mission in this momentous way.

We are excited to announce our fall raffle for a fully-restored vintage Memorymoog Plus synthesizer valued at $15,000. The Memorymoog Plus was owned and played by Dominic Milano, former editorial director of Keyboard magazine. Milano, author of the original Memorymoog manual and a long-time friend of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog, has also autographed the unit. 

The raffle begins on Monday, October 16, 2023 at 7 a.m. ET and ends on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. ET, or when all 5,000 tickets are sold. Tickets are $25 each, 5 for $100, 12 for $200, and 35 for $500. The winner of this iconic instrument will also receive an original Memorymoog manual that will be inscribed to the winner by Milano.

Milano originally received the Memorymoog Plus as partial payment for writing the manual in the mid-1980s. As a former member of the Bob Moog Foundation Board of Directors and a current member of the Board of Advisors, Milano saw the instrument’s potential after a recent restoration by renowned synthesizer technician Wes Taggart.

“After hearing Wes gush about what a great synth it was … I figured it would be perfect for the [Bob Moog] Foundation,” said Milano.

The Memorymoog Plus was Moog Music’s follow-up to the original Memorymoog, Moog’s first production instrument to offer programmable patches saved to a memory bank, enabling users to recall pre-programmed sounds instantly. In addition to the instrument’s massive sound, made possible by six-voice polyphony and three voltage-controlled oscillators, Milano cites the 100-patch memory bank as a favorite feature. 

“Being able to use a foot switch to advance through patches was a godsend for live gigs,” he recounts.

The Memorymoog Plus added functionality over the original model with a MIDI interface, as well as polyphonic and monophonic sequencers.

The Memorymoog Plus up for raffle is noteworthy not only for its massive sound and historic innovations but also its unique provenance. The instrument was owned exclusively by Milano, who helped launch Keyboard magazine in 1975 as assistant editor and would eventually become its editor-in-chief and editorial director. 

Keyboard magazine quickly established itself as a publication at the forefront of the rapidly evolving synthesizer industry. Milano and Keyboard magazine Founding Editor Tom Darter interviewed Bob Moog for the magazine’s first issue. This interview sparked an ongoing relationship between Bob Moog and the publication, with Bob Moog agreeing to write a regular column, “On Synthesizers.”

“That was the start of a multi-decade friendship that I will always cherish,” Milano said.

The Bob Moog Foundation is proud to offer this historic instrument to the public to enhance its ability to inspire new generations of creators and innovators for years to come.

All proceeds from the raffle of the instrument, valued at $15,000, will benefit the Bob Moog Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to inspire creative thinking at the intersection of science, music, history and innovation through its three hallmark projects: Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, the Bob Moog Foundation Archives, and the Moogseum.

The Bob Moog Foundation is excited to announce its upcoming event featuring modular synthesis educator, musician, and inventor of vector synthesis, Chris Meyer, and synthesizer pioneer Dave Rossum.

The event will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at 7 pm (ET) at Citizen Vinyl in downtown Asheville, NC.

The event will conclude with a question and answer session with the audience. 

About Chris Meyer

Chris Meyer has led three lives in the music industry: creating electronic music instruments and tools for companies like Sequential, Digidesign, and Roland (including inventing Vector Synthesis); teaching electronic music synthesis through numerous magazine articles, online courses, and his website LearningModular.com; and now performing his own unique vision of emotional, impressionistic electronic music under the name Alias Zone. He is also the co-author of the acclaimed, Patch & Tweak with Kim Bjørn. 

Each of Chris’ compositions is based on a story that informs its creation. He starts with a sonic image that captures his imagination: a complex sound, an alluring rhythm, or a field recording that documents a specific time and place. The story they hint at then becomes the touchstone that determines each layer Chris adds to the piece, be they richly textured ambient environments, unique sounds he programs on his modular synthesizers, exotic percussion, and more. His goal is to convey emotions of mystery, longing, and joy, creating a deeply human experience. In contrast to many electronic music composers who focus primarily on studio work, virtually all Alias Zone tracks are conceived as live performances, and are then later edited into album form.

About Dave Rossum

Fifty years ago, Dave Rossum dropped out of graduate school to found E-mu Systems.  In his role as E-mu’s Chief Wizard, he invented numerous modular synthesis technologies including ultra-stable oscillators, modular sequencers, polyphonic keyboards and analog synthesizer chips, before pioneering Digital Sampling Synthesis with the Emulator, and later the Drumulator, the SP-1200, and the Proteus.  Dave also assisted other companies in their groundbreaking products, such as the Oberheim 4-voice and the Sequential Prophet 5.  

In 1994, E-mu was acquired by Creative Labs, and Dave became their Chief Scientist.  During the Creative years, E-mu produced the E-64, ESI, Emulator IV, and other well known samplers.  Dave left Creative in 2011 for a 5 year stint as the architect of DSP ICs for cell phone audio.  Then in 2016, Dave founded Rossum Electro-Music, signed on as a Technical Fellow at Universal Audio, and began designing analog ICs for Sound Semiconductor.  When he’s not inventing new synthesis technologies, you’ll find Dave running marathons, SCUBA diving, or backpacking in the High Sierra with his standard poodle, Lily.

Bob Moog was an innovator in the field of modular synthesis and beyond. The Bob Moog Foundation celebrates synthesis in all of its forms, and through this event celebrates the renaissance of modular synthesis. The organization’s interactive Moogseum, located in Asheville, NC, recently added Patching Sound, an exhibit that teaches visitors of all ages how to create sound with a modular synthesizer.

This July, we welcome keyboardist, inventor, and music/audio technology entrepreneur Marcus Ryle to our board of directors. 

Marcus says: “As is the case for virtually everyone in the synthesizer industry, Bob Moog has had a profound impact on me both musically and technically. Recordings of his instruments were the very first synthesizers to capture my imagination as a child in the late sixties. I also feel very fortunate to have been inspired by him personally during my career in the industry. I can think of no greater honor than to help carry forward his legacy with the Bob Moog Foundation so that generations to come can continue to be inspired by his innovative spirit.”

“We are so excited to have Marcus join the Bob Moog Foundation Board of Directors,” said Board of Directors President David Mash. “Marcus’ unique history of technology innovation and product design make him a perfect fit to help us carry out the mission of the Foundation and promote Bob Moog’s legacy of creativity at the intersection of art and technology.”

An innovator and entrepreneur in music and audio technology for over 40 years, Ryle joined Oberheim Electronics in 1980 as a design engineer, helping create several iconic synthesizers. After leaving Oberheim in 1985, Ryle co-founded Fast Forward Designs with Michel Doidic and Susan Wolf. 

Line 6 became a leading brand of guitar effects, amplifiers, and wireless products, and in 2014 was acquired by Yamaha. Ryle later became the general manager of Yamaha’s worldwide guitar division, which included the Line 6 and Ampeg brands along with Yamaha Guitars. 

In 2019, Ryle left Yamaha with Susan Wolf to found the consulting firm WRiiG, providing strategy, technology, and mergers and acquisitions advisement in the music and audio industries. In 2022, his career came full circle with a role in relaunching the Oberheim brand and developing the new OB-X8 synthesizer.

As a musician, Ryle has performed in bands with his vocalist/keyboardist wife, Susan Wolf, and in the 1980s played keyboards and created sounds on releases for artists including Barbra Streisand, Olivia Newton-John, Christopher Cross, Chicago, Chaka Khan, and Lee Ritenour.

Prior to joining our Board of Directors, Ryle spent three years as a member of the Bob Moog Foundation Board of Advisors. He also serves as co-chair for the Bob Moog Foundation’s Captains of Industry supporter program. 

In summer 2023, he joins a respected roster of industry leaders as part of the Bob Moog Foundation’s top supervisory team.

Our board’s diverse members include Emmy winners, CFOs, educators, and nonprofit executives. Their varied and exceptional expertise and experience help advance the educational, historical preservation, and museum projects of our organization.

On May 23, 2023, the 89th anniversary of Bob’s birth, we celebrated “Bob’s Electric Birthday” at the Moogseum in Asheville.

We welcomed members of the electronic music community and fans of modular synthesis from as far away as Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Washington State.

There were rare guided tours of the Moogseum with Michelle Moog-Koussa, which included her reading from “Switched On: Bob Moog and the Synthesizer Revolution.”

We hosted synth pioneer Patrick Gleeson in a reunion of sorts with the vintage Moog modular he purchased in 1968, not yet knowing it would serve as a gateway to joining Herbie Hancock on tour, and even appearing on the masterpiece soundtrack to “Apocalypse Now” (where Gleeson served as master synthesist at Francis Ford Coppola’s request).

The Gleeson modular is now on permanent exhibit at the Moogseum, part of our Patching Sound exhibit.

Born just one year after Bob Moog, Gleeson was a longtime friend of Bob’s, as well as a composer and recording studio founder who worked with artists including Devo, Brian Eno and David Byrne.

As one guest commented, Dr. Gleeson is one of the few in the 1960s who bet everything on a crazy machine called a “Moog” when there were no guaranteed returns on their massive investment.

Gleeson and a select few others were part of the movement that kickstarted what we now experience as a whole new sonic universe. 

Like the lunar astronauts of the same time period, they were that world’s first visitors.

Their exploration of that new world changed music forever.

Gleeson is a seminal part of electronic music history we were honored to experience and share with our community for the sold-out “An Evening With Patrick Gleeson,” the interview and DJ set that formed the close of our celebration.

“Something nobody had heard before”

Here’s a fascinating piece of electronic music history from the interview: an inspiring story from 1972, of how jazz met synthesis when Gleeson introduced Herbie Hancock to the Moog modular.

All text below is taken from Gleeson’s interview with Michelle Moog-Koussa at Bob’s Electric Birthday:

(Herbie) said I’ve got, maybe, some ideas we could explore. I think “Quasar” was the first tune we worked on. 

We got in about 15 seconds, and he said, “(Play) something there, maybe?” So in my mind, I heard some melodic birds rising out of a field and moving out into the distance, and becoming electrified. 

So that’s what we did for about, I would say, no more than another hour. And Herbie said, “Well, I’ve got a lot of things to do today. Why don’t you just keep going, and I’ll be back?” 

And he didn’t specify when he would be back. So I worked all night. And by noon the next day, I had overdubbed half the album. <laughs>

…Herbie was very pleased with it. He told people in print several times how much he liked it. He said it blew his mind; he never heard anything like it.

There had been some connections between jazz and synthesizers earlier, but nothing, I would say, serious, and nothing at the cutting edge of jazz. So this was something nobody had heard before, really.

Preserving and sharing legacies

Our mission is, in part, to preserve legacies, especially those closely connected to Bob’s. The day after Bob’s Electric Birthday, we interviewed Gleeson again at the Bob Moog Foundation offices, filming him for an oral history that will become a permanent part of our archive.

He shared more about his pioneering work with Herbie Hancock, his work on the “Apocalypse Now” soundtrack, and even his thoughts on the future of synthesis.

An electronic music icon, Gleeson was personally invited by Herbie Hancock to join Hancock’s band, served as the master synthesist for the soundtrack to “Apocalypse Now,” and co-engineered “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts,” David Byrne and Brian Eno‘s influential 1981 album.

Gleeson resigned from a job as a university professor in the mid-’60s to experiment with electronic music, eventually founding San Francisco’s Different Fur Studios, and by the ‘70s, touring with Herbie Hancock. Now 88 years old, he returns to live performance as a DJ, solo artist, and as part of a trio.      

This event offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience Dr. Patrick Gleeson demonstrating the Moog modular he used as master synthesist for the “Apocalypse Now” soundtrack.

“Bob’s Electric Birthday” includes tours of the Moogseum, the museum dedicated to sharing exhibits that bring Bob Moog’s legacy to life, guided by the Moogseum’s executive director, Michelle Moog-Koussa — Bob’s daughter.

Moog-Koussa has not guided a public Moogseum tour since 2019. This event marks a rare opportunity to gain special insight into the Moogseum’s exhibits, the Moog Family Archives, and Bob Moog himself. 

During the tours, Moog-Koussa will share historical photos from the Moog Family Archives, a private archive of materials unavailable to the public, and read from the new Bob Moog biography from Oxford University Press, “Switched On: Bob Moog and the Synthesizer Revolution.” 

Tours include birthday cake, coffee, champagne, and a gift bag from the Moogseum store.

A Q&A with Moog-Koussa follows the reading, followed by time to continue exploring the museum and enjoy birthday refreshments in honor of Bob’s birth in 1934.

At 7 p.m., Patrick Gleeson demonstrates the Moog modular heard on “Apocalypse Now.”  Afterward, Moog-Koussa interviews him about his storied career and his lifelong friendship with Bob, followed by a short DJ set. 

Dr. Gleeson has a deep connection to the instrument: He’s its original owner.

Later owners included Don Preston of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention, who used it on recordings and on tour; and Walter Holland of Holland Synthesizers, a founding member of Amber Route.

An Evening With Patrick Gleeson includes a gift bag of Moogseum swag, admission to the Moogseum, and birthday cake and beverages.

Synth pioneer Dr. Patrick Gleeson

Herbie Hancock hired Gleeson as a synthesizer tech in the 1970’s, and ended up asking him to become a full-time member of his band, Mwandishi. Also a composer, Gleeson scored a number of film soundtracks, including “The Plague Dogs,” “Apocalypse Now,” “Crossroads” and “The Bedroom Window.” He has scored nine television series, including “Knots Landing.”
